There are almost 300,000 people injured on Britain’s roads each year with over 3,000 fatalities - almost 10 a day. Although high velocity accidents may cause broken bones, most injuries involve damage to soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons). Common injuries include whiplash, spine injury and brain injury. Psychological conditions such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression may also occur. In the UK the most common car accident compensation claim settlement relates to minor whiplash.

There are three types of collisions that occur during a car accident. There is a vehicle collision, a body collision and an organ collision. In a vehicle collision, the vehicle strikes an object. The body collision occurs when a person's body strikes the interior of the car. The organ collision happens when the person's organs strike interior surfaces of the body.

Wearing a seat belt is still the single most effective action to reduce injury. Failure to wear a seatbelt will reduce the amount of any award made in a car accident compensation claim settlement by at least 25% due to contributory negligence.

If you are involved in a car accident :-

  • Write down the name, address and telephone number of others involved in the accident.
  • Make a note of the date and time of the accident, the street and city
  • Make a note of the weather and road conditions.
  • Make a record of the registration number, make and model of all the vehicles involved.
  • Obtain the name, address and telephone numbers of any witnesses.
  • If the police are involved obtain the officer’s name and contact number.
  • Visit a your local doctor or an emergency department for treatment and to document any injuries and take photographs of any visible injury.

Whether you are a passenger, pedestrian or a driver of a car involved in a collision, you may be entitled to compensation if the accident was partly or totally caused by somebody else’s negligence. A car accident compensation claim settlement will only be paid if you can prove negligence on the part of the other road user. Everyone using the roads owes a ‘duty of care’ to other road users. If you suffer a personal injury in a collision where somebody has breached the duty of care, then they will be liable under negligence laws to pay you damages.
